Acute kidney injury
The Syndrome
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by the deterioration of renal function ranging from several days to a few hours. It provokes a sudden decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) followed by an increase in nitrogen products as well as an imbalance of electrolytes.
The mortality rate in AKI is very high and may reach up to 50% in certain situations. Currently, the only approved treatment for AKI is dialysis which explains the interest in developing a pharmacological treatment for this condition.
The Product
Theratechnologies has developed, and tested in animals, a therapeutic peptide that specifically increases renal plasma flow, glomerular filtration rate and urine output. It improves excretion of nitrogen compounds and limits kidney damage..
The Strategy
The compound developed by Theratechnologies for the treatment of AKI has been targeted as a potential candidate for internal development. The Company intends to complete its preclinical program before considering the advancement of this compound in the clinic.
